About Freeman Wills Croft
Freeman Wills Crofts FRSA (1879-1957) was an Irish engineer and mystery author. He is remembered best for the character of Inspector Joseph French. Crofts was a railway engineer by profession until 1929 when he became a full time detective novelist. He wrote his first book, The Cask, while signed off work sick in 1919. Due to his background with railways, they are included in many of his mysteries, which were notable for their intricate planning and use of timetables.
