About Philip MacDonald
Philip MacDonald (1900-1980) was a British author and screenwriter who served with the British cavalry in World War I, moved to Hollywood in 1931, and became one of the 1930s' most popular mystery writers, creating detective Colonel Anthony Gethryn and penning numerous screenplays including an early version of Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca.
The Story (spoiler free)
In this 1924 debut detective novel, former secret service agent Anthony Gethryn investigates the murder of cabinet minister John Hoode, who has been bludgeoned to death with a wood-rasp at his country estate, where every suspect appears to have an ironclad alibi until Gethryn devises an ingenious solution that reveals how the killer could have committed the crime.
The Rasp was the subject of the twelfth episode in the Green Penguin Book Club series, in which Caroline discussed the book with guest Sergio Angelini.
