July Update from the Shedunnit Book Club

What we're doing and reading this month.

Hello book club members,

Welcome to a digest of what's going on in the club this month so far.

Technical issues: We have now completed the website and subscription migration that I wrote to you about a few weeks ago. Thank you very much for bearing with us during the disruption. You will have found that it is necessary to log in afresh via a link sent to your email in order to access your account or the forum — don't be alarmed if this is the case, it is part of our new anti-spam measures and only needs doing once. If you haven't yet got your new private podcast feed set up, you can also now do that for yourself here. That form will also resend the welcome email if you would like it again. The new Book Club homepage, which contains useful links and the full library of bonus episodes, can be found at shedunnitshow.com/bookclub. If you have any issues with any aspect of your membership, please don't hesitate to contact me on caroline@shedunnitshow.com.

Vote now: You can vote to choose our October 2025 book right now — the poll will be live in the forum until 23rd July. This is a fun one, because for the first time we're choosing from a shortlist of books that have been runners up in multiple previous votes. One of them has appeared six previous times! Maybe this is its month, or perhaps it's about to become seven losses in a row... Make sure you have your say before next week.

Watching party update: I have now contacted all those who volunteered to host occasional live watches and am getting dates set up with those who responded. I hope to publish a schedule for you very soon. We’re still in great need of suggestions for things members would like to watch if we’re to create a fully hybrid programme, so please make those here.

July's book: I hope you are getting on well with our book for this month, The Feast by Margaret Kennedy, our selection for our "hotel/resort setting" theme. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it at the end of the month.

The primer episode about this book is now available for listening, and is a two-part experience: find part one (no spoilers) here, and part two (full spoilers) here. Alternatively, you can set up the club feed in your podcast app and listen to all the bonus content that way. I'll be opening the discussion thread about this book in the forum on the last day of the month and you'll get an email alert from me when it is open for contributions. There's no need to hurry, though — the thread will stay open in perpetuity for conversation about this book whenever you have finished reading.

Short Story Club continues its exploration of Bodies from the Library Vol. 1 by looking at “The Man with the Twisted Thumb” by Anthony Berkeley. The discussion thread will be posted in the forum on the 22nd of the month and you can see a master thread of what is coming up in future months here.

Re-Readers: This month, the group of members who are making their way back through the club's past reading choices are revisiting The Man in the Queue by Josephine Tey and the discussion is open for contributions here. If you'd like to join a future re-read, you can find the full schedule for the year here.

Future book choices: In August (Translation from French) we have selected The Cellars of the Majestic by Georges Simenon (sometimes also found under the title Maigret and the Hotel Majestic) and in September we are reading Tragedy at Law by Cyril Hare. If you have suggestions for future titles you'd like to read, please make them here.

Until next time,

Caroline
